The 4-speed semi-automatic transmission is the teaching tool: you shift gears like a real bike, but there's no clutch lever to stall. It's the halfway house between twist-and-go and full manual, and it's how a lot of riders learn what gears are for.
Fourteen/twelve-inch tires and a cradle-type steel tube frame keep it sized and priced for younger riders; the 35+ mph top end is plenty for a first gas season.
